The Gornergrat, Zermatt, Switzerland – Sunday

Sunday morning, we took the Gornergrat, a cog train up to a glacier with a nice view of the Matterhorn and the whole range of mountains, include the tallest mountian in Switzerland, the Dufourspitze. All the way up the mountain, it was a wall of white clouds and we couldn’t see anything. But we only had the one day, so we had to make due. Note that the train was about 50 bucks a person. And it’s totally cloudy. Sigh. But after we got up to the top, a few minutes later, the mountains started peeping out of the clouds and you could get a glimpse of something else other than a white wall.

It was really cold up there, but they had a gift shop where you could warm up. There was a huge group of Japanese tourists up there, and every once in a while, you’d hear excited cries from outside, and you’d race out to see what mountain was clear enough to see.

We stayed up there about 2 hours and by the time we left, the view was great, except for the Matterhorn, which stayed half covered with clouds. (The top half, that is.) Here is the wikipedia page of the Matterhorn with some photos of it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matterhorn.

I took entirely too many photos.

Here is Doug and I in front of the clouds!

Looks like an observatory?

Since there was nothing to photograph, the St. Bernard dogs were posing for pics! The Matterhorn is right behind their stand and totally clouded over!

The Matterhorn is behind this bank of clouds. You can see the train we took up the mountain here.

The Matterhorn starts to peep out, but the top is still covered:

Glaciers! We were up there for so long that I have many pics of the same scene, in various states of cloud cover. Witness:

This was the view in front, left of the Matterhorn.
