Heidelberg, Germany – Thursday

Thursday, August 10, 2006

Today I took a cab up to the Old Bridge Gate to save my knees. They bothered me quite a bit this afternoon – probably from yesterday’s exertions, but what can you do? I tried to take it easy and take breaks to rest them. I managed to see what I wanted, so that’s good!,

So, I saw the Old Bridge Gate, the Old Bridge, which has a nice view!

You can see the castle up on the hill here:

The view from the bridge is really nice – you can even see the castle!

I had a mozzerella and tomato sandwich for lunch, which was very tasty – ate on the steps of the fountain in the Marktplatz. I even ordered it in German – sorta. Ein, bitte!

Then checked out the Church of the Holy Spirit again. I took some pics of the gargoyles, and of the “Physicist’s Window”, which has E=mc^2 on it!

Here are some more pics I took while walking around the area. To the left of the yellow building is the store than sells chocolate “student kisses”.

Headed for the University Square, took some pics of the Rathaus:

…and the Old University building, where there is a museum.

Inside, I geeked out took a pic of Kirchoff and Bunsen’s spectroscope.

Also took a ton of pics of the Old Hall, which is upstairs, and is beautiful! It was dark in there, so I had to use the night setting, so the pics are slightly blurry.

And the Student’s Prison, which is around back. Students were imprisoned here for minor infractions, like public drunkenness and the like – and it’s all graffitied by them. It’s really interesting!

I shopped for presents at Kathe Wohlfahrt, which has all kind of wood ornaments and such – and bought some chocolate “student kisses”. After that, my knees were pretty much shot, so I caught a cab by the bridge and came back to read and relax!
