Füssen to Austria to St. Moritz to Lake Como, Italy – Thursday

Goodbye to Füssen!

Today we drove to Italy – through the mountains in Germany and Austria, through the mountains of Switzerland, and into Italy. Four countries in one day. Easy border crossings – just gestured through.

We stopped for a restroom break and to take in the view in Austria – they had a beautiful view of the tallest German mountain, the Zugspitze.

Here is a pretty glacial stream that we passed on the road. We stopped so I could take a few pics:

We had lunch at a pizza place in Switzerland – and stopped for a bit to look at the lake in St. Moritz, where there was a regatta going on!

From Switzerland, we descended quite a bit at the Maloja pass – which was a series of sharp switchbacks. Many many of them. It was really crazy!

The lake just north of Como is gorgeous – Como is beautiful too – very built up in sections and lots of tunnels through the mountains. It is lovely. We had a terrible time finding the hotel – their directions said only that it was “on the left”. Thank goodness we had a googlemap printout which showed it down closer to the lake – we had to take a tiny sidestreet that barely looked like a street. We must have passed it 4 or 5 times and not realized that it was the street we wanted. Also, there had been signs, but they were labeled “Albergo Lenno”, which would have been fine if they had called their hotel “Albergo Lenno” anywhere else. But it was all “Hotel Lenno”. Argh. We finally made it, and then got to our room, which, though it has a lake view, is tiny, and the bed is terribly uncomfortable. I miss Germany and their feather comforters and pillows and soft beds already!

We had dinner at a casual restaurant on the water – the only one open early enough for us – we split spinach gnocci and tortellini, both of which were really good. And an ice cream sundae. I can’t get used to saying “grazie”, as I’ve been saying “danke” for a week and a half! I’m really bummed with this hotel, as it was supposed to be really nice, and it isn’t cheap. No internet either. Did I mention how terrible the bed is? I”m starting to lok forward to going home. We’ve been away for forever, it feels like!

Here is the view from our window – as you can see, the hotel is right on the lake – and a pic of our teeny room! It only goes another foot and a half or so from the end of the bed to the wall!
