Northern California 5 – Monterey

We got to Monterey and did an Amazing Race type navigation to find the Monarch butterfly grove, as Monterey is where the Monarchs winter. We found it, finally, but the butterflies were all clustered on this one tree that was in a neighboring yard to the butterfly sanctuary. They had a telescope trained on them, and I took some pics through the telescope with varying results.

Pretty lighthouse, but holy cow, rude people running it! We got there right at 5, which is when they supposedly closed, but the gate was open so we thought we’d check it out, even if we didn’t expect a tour or anything. I tried the door, and it was open, so I opened it and started to step in. Then a lady grabbed it and snapped at me “We’re closed!” and literally, physically pushed me out the door. (Mind you, the little visitor room was filled with people.) I was totally stunned. On our walk back around the building, some guy also associated with the lighthouse said “Did you just exit through the entrance?” Like he was unhappy we went out that way. I was so pissed. I think I snapped something about being physically pushed out of the entrance. Boy, I was mad. All she had to do was say something polite. Or you could lock the freaking door if you’re closed. We weren’t the only ones trying to check out the lighthouse at the hour, btw.

We looked at the tide pools on the coast. It made me think of Molly in Tam Lin!

The little snail shells? They’re actually hermit crabs! There were thousands of them!
