Vacation Day 1 – Arizona

Today we flew out to Phoenix, AZ to begin our vacation, which will include the Grand Canyon, Bryce and Zion, none of which I’ve ever seen.

I’ve never been to this region of the county before and it’s pretty foreign in appearance to me! I’m an East Coast girl – I’ve spent my whole life living in NJ (18 years), PA (5 years), and MD (12 and counting, eek!). So it’s been interesting to see cacti just growing all over the place. Our flight went smoothly, but the baggage took forever, as did the car rental line.

And I forgot to look for Phoenix postcards for Jen, so I think my chance is lost on that.

We drove north from Phoenix to see Montezuma Castle, on the recommendation of a work friend. It’s really cool – there are these cliff dwellings there built by the Sinagua tribe around 1125 AD and they were lived in until the 1400s. There’s another site called Tuzigoot which we didn’t have time for, but we’re going to try to catch tomorrow morning.

It was so pretty out with the sun in the leaves of the trees.

This is a diorama of what the cliff dwellings would have looked like inside:

Next we drove to Montezuma Well – a huge water (and algae) filled sink hole. It didn’t photograph very well because of the angle of the sun on the far wall. But here are a few pics.

Look, another cactus!
