Vacation Day 3 – The Grand Canyon, Part I

I have about a billion pics of the Grand Canyon, many of which look very much the same, so I’ll try to edit myself more than I usually do.

The GC is really impressive and at the same time hard to grasp because it’s just that big. It’s also hard to judge in scale because of the nature of the sort of inner canyon and slightly higher mesa, with lots of buttes. It’s lovely though, with lots of different colors. The colors change with the sun angle too.

Pretty much my first view, from Mather Point. That’s Bright Angel Canyon running diagonally on the right side of the image:

I rarely like people in my photos (I’m just not the family vacation sort, I like more arty photos!), but for the GC, they provide a good sense of scale.

Here’s a view of the next lookout over from the one I’m on. You can see the tiny people on it:

Here’s a map of part of the South Rim:

The different kinds of rocks. Although the rocks are old, the canyon is young geologically, having been formed in the last 5-6 million years.

A butterfly I caught near the Visitor’s Center:

You can just make out the Colorado River here – the dark green patch near the center of the image. Just below it is another swath of green and a bit of trail.

There are tons of sheer drops with no railings. I didn’t get too close to the edge here:

You can see one of the trails in this, near the right foreground. I think it might be part of the south Kaibab trail, but I’m not sure:
