Vacation Day 6 – Zion

Bryce was *freezing* and windy, so we were glad to move on to Zion, which was nice and warm.

The drive into the east side of Zion is just amazing. You’re surrounded by towering stone “sand dunes”. Once upon a time there were sand dunes thousands of feet high and over time they cemented and compressed. They still kind of resemble dunes if you use your imagination.

This is “Checkerboard Mesa”:

When you drive into Zion, you drive into the canyon through two rock tunnels, one a mile long, and then a bunch of switchbacks. Then you are in this canyon with high walls – it’s beautiful!

We went on the Emerald Pools hike. This is the “medium” hard path that leads to the Middle Emerald Pool.

And here we are at the Middle Emerald Pool:

We then hiked up to the Upper Emerald pool, which is gorgeous. The pictures don’t do it justice in any way. You have to go .3 or .4 miles scrambling up rocks – then you reach the cliff walls, and the pool is against the walls. They are really steep and all around you. It’s really really cool. I wish I’d gotten a picture of the trail!

We took the path down to the Lower Emerald Pool, which had this huge rock surrounding it, that water flowed over.
