Seattle Trip Report – Day 1, part 2

My officemate, Don and I had gotten tickets for the 1:30 harbor cruise, so we raced over there to make the boat, which we did without any problem.

We were still on east coast time, and having had a big a breakfast, we weren’t that hungry yet. Also, I didn’t want to eat right before a boat ride in case I got motion sick. (I didn’t.)

So, here we go! Lovely day, no?

We’ll head this way later, to where the shipping stuff is.

This is the Edgwater Hotel, WHERE THE BEATLES STAYED in 1964. Their room was somewhere along here on the 2nd floor. You used to be able to fish from your room. Also a glimpse of the Space Needle.

Sea lions! Apparently they play “king of the hill” and try to push each other off, and it’s a whole big production for them to get up there in the first place. We didn’t see any real activity though.

We got to see these in action, stacking large containers on the container ships.

Here’s the Hanjin. We saw it set out to sea a week later from the Space Needle!

After the harbor tour, we got a late lunch at a seafood place. I had some crab bisque that was pretty good. It was warm, anyway, and so was the restaurant. By the time we got out, it was raining pretty good. But we perservered. We headed over to the Edgewater because THE BEATLES STAYED THERE. :-)

I was a total coward but Don was nice enough to ask if we could see their “Beatles Suite”, which is where the Beatles stayed. Well, it’s been renovated since then. But still. They must get requests like this all the time, because the lady was really nice about it, checked to make sure no one was staying there, and then phoned for a bellhop to take us there!

Next we headed down to Pike Market. We caught a lovely sunset, where you could kind of make out the mountains.

Next we headed to the first Starbucks. I had to, since some work friends and I have frequent Starbucks runs here, and it’s kind of a thing. I emailed them a pic and a “wish you were here” and one of them sent me back a note saying I was on hallowed ground and blessed. LOL

The place was jammed with Japanese tourists so it took a little while, and frankly, the hot chocolate was not as good as the ones at the Starbucks near work. Oh well. At least I have made the pilgrimage. And I can add that to having been to a Starbucks in Beijing and Madrid. :-)

You can see Don waiting for me, checking his phone.

After that we wandered around Pike Market a little more.

The place next to this did have some old board games that we briefly considered for game night. One was a Happy Days game. :-)

We weren’t very hungry after a late lunch, and the opening reception for AAS had food, so we held out for that. Lotta astronomers:
