Southern California: Disneyland!

Doug was out in CA for back-to-back conferences, so I went out the weekend between them.

I had a late flight on Thursday night – and saw this lovely sunset:

I had a layover in Dallas-Ft Worth, and managed to get a quiet sit-down meal at a Cajun place (Papadeaux’s?) in the A terminal. Yum:

Doug picked me up at the Orange County airport and we headed to his hotel. They had a really good breakfast buffet and you could get eggs any way you liked. Yum:

I got to sleep in and relax on Friday while Doug finished out his conference and then we headed to…Disneyland!!

I’d never been and I was really excited.

Wow, the castle was really tiny! I’m so used to Disney World!

Unfortunately we got there at the hottest part of the day. We trekked all the way over to Space Mountain only to find it was out of order, so no Fast Passes. So we started heading way back across the park to Splash Mountain to try and get fast passes there and I wasn’t feeling great with the heat, and Doug is faster than me anyway, so he parked me in the shade near a Mexican restaurant and got us some fast passes. Then we had a really nice lunch at this counter-service Mexican place. I recommend it!

Also, cake!

Small World! I loved how they had some of the Disney characters into the displays:

Overall I loved Disneyland – the lines are all outdoors, so that can be kind of hot, but mostly it worked fine. We went on Pirates 3 times – and it was longer and had more hills than Florida. The Haunted Mansion outside wasn’t so fancy, but inside seemed mostly the same. Splash Mountain was a long flume car and moved faster and had an extra hill. Space Mountain wasn’t a long flume-type car, it had seats in pairs. It was smoother than Florida and lots of fun.

The only thing we didn’t have time to go on was the Indy ride because it was down for a while and we had trouble getting fast passes.

We also took the train that goes around Disney and between stations, we want past the fake Grand Canyon and dinosaurs!

I’ve always like her:

And I found this in one of the gift shops as decoration – I think it looks like her:

We had a late dinner post-Space Mountain at Blue Bayou, which we were able to walk up and get seats at. It looked like such a cool place in the fake bayou that overlooks the beginning of the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. You could hear faint screams off in the distance from where the ride entered that first hill!

The food was really good -the gumbo soup course was delicious, the cajun inspired salad was delicious and our entrees were both really good too! We got some sort of crabcake thing (which we normally don’t get outside of Maryland or Delaware) and a jambalaya that were both delicious. If you can get in and want to have a little more expensive meal, I really recommend it. The food, service and atmosphere were all great!
