Arizona trip – Day 1, Grand Canyon

Time to recount my Arizona trip from last month. Doug and myself, along with several work friends, met Michelle out in Arizona – our ultimate goal was to see the solar eclipse, but we also wanted to get as much sightseeing in as possible.

My officemate, Don, had gone out a few days early and was doing his own thing. The plan was for him to meet us later at the Grand Canyon. Michelle picked the rest of us up from the airport and we squeezed all 5 of us in her car. We drove about an hour or so north, and then met up with Craig’s dad at a McDonalds. We’d meet up with them again in Page the next day.

After that, Michelle, Tim, Doug, and I headed off to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. We took a slight detour to Montezuma Castle since it was on the way. It’s a cool cliff dweller site.

After Montezuma Castle, we needed lunch so we hit a Five Guys. Love their burgers, but us East Coasters were amused that we ended up eating at a chain we have right across from work. Michelle and I took a pic to send to our friend Janine:

And then we hit the Grand Canyon!

But first, this cool plant!

Ok, now you can see the Canyon:

I like this one because our shadows are in it:

You can see tiny people on the next lookout over:

When we got to Mather Point there was a cute squirrel – of course people were feeding it, which made our wildlife expert Michelle justifiably mad.

This is one of my fav pics though:

We were about to move on, but I got a text from Don that he was at the park, so we tried to meet up with him. And very nearly missed him, but Michelle spotted him (she’d seen pics on LJ, so she vaguely knew what he looked like, but he nearly fooled her by tying back his hair), and after that we went back out to Mather Point for a few more pics before moving on towards Desert View.

I tried to do a panorama at Mather Point, but it ended up making Don have two faces, and Tim and Michelle to not be all there! It’s kind of cool though…

I appear to have a burned out pixel or a pinhole something in my camera. (See the little green dot.) This would actually end up being cool during the eclipse later on.

There were lots of people sitting on the rim waiting for the sunset:

It was really cold and windy on the rim but the sunset was lovely!
