Arizona trip – Day 3, Antelope Canyon

On our way back to the parking area at Horseshoe bend, we actually ran into Craig and his dad. We agreed to meet up later for dinner and headed back to the hotel to rest for a bit. Since the Dam Bar and Grill had a wait, we found someplace a few doors down that oddly had both Mexican and Italian food. I thought it was pretty decent, and there was no wait, and we got to sit out on the patio, which was cool, because Venus was up and very bright. (And we had binoculars on us, so there was some astronomy geekery.)

The next morning we were able to relax a bit because our next tour wasn’t until 10:30 – and that was to Antelope Canyon, which is a slot canyon located on the Navajo reservation. At certain times of day, shafts of light come into the canyon. It wasn’t cheap, but if you wanted better opportunities to photograph the light, you had to pay even more. It was kind of annoying. Anyway, we were loaded onto to the back of a pickup truck where there were seats. I’m sure it was very safe. :-/

Craig and his dad, Bob, joined us for this trip:

The drive into the reservation went through a lot of sand and it was interesting as the truck slipped and slid through it!

Might I also mention that we gave the Native Americans pretty much the most godforsaken pieces of land ever?

In the canyon:

The rock was really beautiful. Here’s a “spine”:

Look at all the photographers trying to get a shot:

There were people in the way everywhere – it was really crowded by the time we left and it was really hard to not get people in your shots. To make the beams of light more pronounced, the guides would throw handfuls of dust into them.

We tried to take a group picture, but two people on our tour (who had been really annoying) decided to be in our picture. Oh well.
