What I’ve been up to – January/February, part 2

I had so many pics I haven’t had time to post in the last couple of months I had to break it up.

We start with photos of a tasting my friends and I did at the Mandalay Restaurant in DC. We’re friends with the owners of the Silver Spring restaurant and we hadn’t really tried out the new DC one yet. They have small plates and drinks downstairs, and a 7 course tasting menu only upstairs. The food was SO good. There wasn’t one course I didn’t like. We went on a good day too because Aung was there and we got to chat with him. Apparently once he realized we were there, he texted his waitstaff to tell them to take good care of us! He told us some interesting things about the food too, like he specifically wanted to cater to food allergies or needs. And they have a different tasting menu every night!

Here’s what we had.

Course 1: Mung Bean Fritters. So good, with the sauce we all like from the Silver Spring restaurant.

Course 2: Ginger Salad with garlic and peanuts. Says Alan, “Nuts from the word go!”

Course 3: Chicken coconut soup with egg. This soup was so good I wanted to marry it.

Courses 4 and 5: Pork “stew” and catfish with yellow curry, pickled mango, with tamarind. The pork was stewed for 5 hours and was super tender and the catfish was amazing.

Course 6: Chicken with Chinese broccoli, red pepper and white onion. Delicious and very light.

Course 7: Cassava cake with coconut ice cream and toasted coconut. OMG amazing. So good. A great meal and every course was fantastic!

Then there was high tea at Reynolds Tavern with Janine and author Diana Peterfruend. I can’t remember if I posted about this or not, I’m going to say not. It was cold so we just did normal clothes and hats.

At work – we got a chance to see our former co-worker and friend Cristina as part of the 2013 astronaut class. She’s on the right in the black sweater and red shirt. The 2013 astronaut class is here with some other Goddard scientists.

Doing some recording with Kevin:

Whilst recording, I had left my coat on a chair. Kevin’s cat Raoul found it:

I didn’t have the heart to kick him off it:

Later Raoul helped us on keyboards:

So, in office hijinks. I heard commotion next door and went over to see what was going on. Apparently Alex had lined up all the coffee syrups in a circle with a mug in the middle and then pressed them all down with a book to see what would happen. What happened was a mess.

Since I missed it, the experiment was repeated. What resulted is an incredibly lengthy but (to me) funny video which pretty much encapsulates what we’re like on a Friday afternoon. I’ve actually watched it more than once and it still makes me laugh.

More macaron shells. I like this recipe best. They turn out the nicest. I made macarons for the superbowl party we went to:

These are almond with caramel cream and they were so good. I really like the caramel cream. Especially with the almond shells.

I also made chocolate with caramel cream:
