Doug and I managed one more dinner with Amber before she left for Rhode Island. We went to the all the meat you can eat Korean BBQ place in Rockville. It was really fun. (Also, everytime I hear “Rockville,” I have a compulsion to quote the REM song… “Don’t go back to Rockville!”

Then we went kayaking with Doug, Amber, Ron, Meredith and Kayli. I wore my embarrassing sequined hat.

Really not a bad way to spend a Sunday afternoon in July. The weather was perfect – high 70s. Unheard of!

My mom sent me pics of she and my Dad enjoying the beach in Delaware:

I had an unexpected and nice conversation with my friend Bjørn about the Arctic Race of Norway, a bike race he’s helping to organize – and the weather in Alta. He sent me this. They really were having nice weather! Note the midnight sun.

The weather continued to be nice here as well. We had gyros at a place we like by University of Maryland. Alex took this picture and tweeted it saying “My coworkers discussing ancient technology: “landline telephones” ”

More work:

One of my oldest Goddard friends, Jim, stopped by work. He took a job at HQ 3 years ago and then took a different job after his job at HQ, so we don’t see him much anymore. I worked with him when I was an intern there 18 years ago…

Some nice woman emailed me because she knew from my costume blog I collected Victorian name pins and she had spotted this Victorian Maggie locket on ebay – I won it, so yay! It’s really pretty!

One of our Silence in the Library authors, Rory, just moved to Seattle. Before she left, Jennifer (another DC writer) and I joined her at Mrs. K’s Tollhouse in Silver Spring for a goodbye dinner.

(Oh, and you have to read Rory’s book because it’s really good and I’m not just saying that:

Anyway, it was (yet again) beautiful weather despite it being July. The three of us (plus Rory’s baby) sat outside and enjoyed a view of these gorgeous gardens. The food was good also! As was the company.

I caught her napping in the sun in the morning:

Don (my officemate) bought this card. It’s funny because it’s true. He’s “card guy” and usually is our go-to person for goodbye and birthday cards for the group.

We had a birthday lunch for Connor, Steve’s son, who is 13. Which makes me feel really old! There were a lot of jokes like, what every 13 year old boy wants for his birthday is lunch with his father’s middle-aged co-workers and subordinates! And then Alex was going to write “You’re 13 now! One day closer to…” and I supplied the word “death” at the same time Alex said “drinking” – which maybe tells you something about our personalities.

We love Connor though, so I’m glad we were able to have a lunch for him.

Ok, that’s it for now!
