Norway Day 2: Bergensbanen

On the second full day of our Norway trip, we took a 3:30 train from Oslo to Bergen. The Bergensbanen is one of the most famous and beautiful train lines in the world.   It’s about 6 hours – and cheap if you buy your tickets through NSB, I don’t recommend buying them through Eurorail which is the first google link that comes up. They were way more expensive and you can get seats in the Komfort car via NSB for way cheaper, especially if you buy the mini pris price.  The Komfort car is nice – it gives you more leg room.  Get a window seat – of course. The train seats are two seats per side. The scenery is breath-taking. And the best scenery, up in the mountains, hits around hour 4.  So hit the cafe car early. There are cafe cars and the food was actually quite good. They have snacks and also warm food.  You can eat there or bring it back to your seat. Either side of the train will give you a beautiful view but if you want to see Finse and a lot of the mountain scenery, I’d sit on the left. That’s the side we were on.

We started out from Bergen and moved into rolling mountain scenery that was reminiscent of Pennsylvania. There were many beautiful lakes and it was quite lovely.

Here is Finse. It has an elevation of 1,222 metres (4,009 ft), which makes it the highest station on the entire Norwegian railway system.

We got some dinner – kjøttkake og poteter in brun saus- meatballs and potatoes in brown sauce. It was actually really tasty!

The last hour of the trip is tunnels. Lots of tunnels. So this is a good time to take a nap (because the scenery you just spent hours watch was exhaustingly beautiful), or get something to eat. And I mean A LOT of tunnels. You won’t get much of a view. When we drove along this train line later, we counted and got to somewhere around 33 tunnels!

Here’s two little videos of what the train ride actually looks like:

And of course, should you watch to watch the ENTIRETY of the train ride, here is Norway to the rescue – the whole thing recorded for Norwegian slow TV!
