Norway Day 3: Mount Fløyen

On our next day in Bergen, we checked out the funicular – Fløyibanen to Mount Fløyen. We had a fairly rare non-rainy day. We really lucked out since the forecast had not been great for Bergen. (Predictably.) Mount Fløyen has a gorgeous view and there are all sorts of hiking trails up there, but go by 9am – the lines get long after that.  We had been warned and so we went a little before 9 (it opens at 7:30 I think!) and had almost no wait – when we came down at 10:30 there was a huge line.  Note that if you have the time, you can also walk down the mountain (or up it!), which we would have done if we’d had time. In that case, don’t buy a round trip on the funicular, just get a one way.

There you can see our hotel near the Brygge – right by the big boat!

We walked by that park with the large lake later, when we got our rental car!

There were little signs on some of the trees:

Please don’t scare the baby dinosaurs:

This says (literally), “don’t sit in where all hope is out.”

Cool roots:

We ran into a nice older Norwegian guy who showed us this lake and where blueberries were growing (not ripe yet) and told us about the area. He was very nice.

I like this sign! Vennligst ikke kyss frosken. Please don’t kiss the frog. :-)

And of course, a troll.

When we got done walking around, the balcony looked like this. So I’m glad we caught it early when it was mostly just us!

When we got down the mountain, back into town, we stopped at the Bergen Starbucks so I could get a mug. :-) And I spotted this. Frozen is big even in Norway, the country that inspired it!

I also thought this McDonald’s building was funny. :-)

Here’s a non-city-specific Starbucks mug:

A last look at Bryggen since we had to go check out. So many tourists in the morning!

So the Brygge stores are long and there are alleys between them and lots of stories in one building.

A lot of people were taking pictures of this ivy covered building. So I took one too. I figured they knew something I didn’t.

We ate some lunch at an outdoor place that had a nice view of the Brygge:

Doug got mussels he really enjoyed:

We also had this view – you can see the funicular and the mountaintop view:

Here is that lake we saw from above – this was on our walk to the car rental place in town.

Mount Fløyen again:

And a random church, from the car.

We next headed out of town, on our way to Gudsvangen and the Nærøy Fjord!
