Fourth of July

We did our usual 4th of July thing where we park in Arlington and walk down to the Potomac River and the Memorial Bridge to watch the fireworks from across the water from the Lincoln Memorial. It’s a nice spot and you don’t have to deal with security. Ed and our friend Sean joined us. Sean is a prof at JMU now (he had a postdoc at Goddard my first year there and I got to know him because he had been in grad school with my officemate, Allie) so he’s not around that much anymore. He always calls the 4th “Sean’s Big Day of Summer Fun” – and also, traditionally misplaces his phone, which fortunately did not happen this year. He’s always had this huge brick-like phones – and sure enough, he has an iPhone 6+ so his phone is still huge!

There was also this time many many years ago, when only Ed had a cell phone and we had two cars of people and we got separated from the one car and we made Ed get out to wait for the other car and also give his his phone and it totally made sense at the time. But it’s pretty funny now that we can’t remember the context of it fully, only that he took Ed’s phone and made him get out of the car. :-)

Here are kayakers – I’d love to do this some year.

Got my Colbert shirt on, of course. Gotta be patriotic!

Unfortunately, the air was super still and it was super humid, so smoke built up and didn’t move, blocking a lot of the fireworks. :-/
