What I’ve Been Up To, August, part 2

Back to August!

For a while we had a good view of the back of JWST! That is where the science instruments are:

I got a JWST shirt (thanks, Tanya! Which I’m hoping they will reprint – they have a lot of requests to do so, so keep them coming! I got an even better picture later, but you’ll have to wait til the October update.

You can see the little motors that control each mirror mounted on the back of them.

Ron was in town and Doug was out so we met up in Alexandria. We had yummy southern food, took a long walk, and had ice cream! Fun evening!

I got the shrimp and grits and Ron got fish and grits.

Willow’s “selfie”:
IMG_3528

Her tummy hair still hasn’t really grown back thanks to the drugs she is on, but she’s still (as of October) acting normal and feeling good.
IMG_3532

Two of my high school friends, Kristie and Lee, whom I haven’t seen since high school, came to visit me at work! It was fun to show them the telescope and to catch up with them! Lee brought her son as well.

More sunsets at the local pond:

It was truly the summer of Pokemon, and Etsy was here to enable me. How cute is this Jolteon coin purse?

From the backyard:

We met Mike and Gloria for dinner in DC because poor Gloria had to work late again. At least we had a yummy dinner! Crispy potatoes with pancetta:
IMG_3581

Asparagus, mushrooms, crispy parmigiano reggiano, including a soft boiled egg. It was amazing.
IMG_3582

After we punctured the egg:
IMG_3583

Lamb shoulder, fennel puree, seasonal vegetables, mint
IMG_3584

My absolute fav, the Jersey Shore pizza: fried calamari, tomato, provolone, cherry pepper aioli
IMG_3585

Aleppo shells, with shrimp, bay scallops, clams, calamari, tomato
IMG_3586

Gnocci with pork ragu, whipped ricotta, crispy rosemary:

I don’t know how this is a comfortable place to sleep:

That’s better.

Bunny!

At the pond again:
IMG_3634

Brittany Lee – love her work so much.
IMG_3641

This literally made me laugh out loud:
IMG_3645

Not a bad lobster roll at a local deli type chain place.
IMG_3657

Another pond sunset:
IMG_3668

I literally take a picture every time I parallel park now. Thanks to the sexist parking practices of the Greek festival from last year. And you know, every time I’ve done it, I’ve done a good job.
IMG_3662

From work – Joe’s one-day badges. They have some automated thing now and he tries to make himself look a serial killer occasionally.
IMG_3665

Read the Whole Book Club did The Trial. I did not end up reading it, but the discussion was still really good. I liked Joe’s sign for it.
IMG_3680

Alex couldn’t make it to the meeting, but he gave me some discussion notes.
IMG_3681

A new Pho place opened (still a chain place, but a local chain). We went to their soft opening. It was good! I had a vermicelli bowl.
IMG_3683

IMG_3686

Back to DC. We went to the Greek Exhibit at the National Geographic Museum.

Some buildings:
IMG_3705

No pics in the exhibit. We went for lunch at Paul afterwards. I got eclairs to go too.
IMG_3703

IMG_3704

More sunsets at the pond, plus the blue heron that seems to live there.
IMG_3711

IMG_3825

I was at a party and someone brought this pomeranian – it was like the dog version of Willow.
IMG_3713

IMG_3715

So cute!

The heron at the pond:

National Harbor carousel. We met for lunch for Doug’s birthday:

We ate at our usual place, the Crab Cake cafe. So good!

White boards at work!
IMG_3871

We went to Bonefish Grill for Doug’s birthday dinner. Despite being a chain, the food is really good there. It was good this time too. Also a raspberry martini or something like that.

IMG_3876

Pretty sunset when we came out:
IMG_3877

Everyone was taking first day of school pics, so I made Alex and Joe take a picture on their first day back to grad school classes. They look so happy, don’t they?
IMG_3886

Alex has a new birthday card catch-phrase. Joe’s is the same as usual. But to explain “Pig Joe”… So Steve’s kids know Joe has pet guinea pigs, and we have a lot of Joes, so Steve’s son referred to this Joe as “pig Joe” – meaning the one with guinea pigs. Steve suggested he not call Joe that. LOL But it was too good a story to not tell everyone. It’s nice that Joe has embraced it.
IMG_3887

How fun are the snapchat filters that put makeup on you?
IMG_3896

IMG_3897

IMG_3898

Kristin went on vacation to Smith Island and brought back actual Smith Island cake. It was soooo good. I love Smith Island Cake!
IMG_3903

Band practice. I got to play Rich’s new Ibanez hollow-body:
