What I Was Up to – October 2017

October brought more work on the baby room. Willow was still convinced that it was her new room.

October also brought the promotion of one of my dearest friends. Janine is now a Lt Colonel in the USMC, which is a huge accomplishment. I am so so proud of her, and how she is using her career to better the Marine Corps, and to better things for the women who are following in her footsteps. She is a wonderful example to her young Marines, both male and female, and did I mention how proud I am of her? She called out everyone who went to her ceremony individually to thank them and say something nice, and I wept through pretty much the entire thing, because it was incredibly moving. I was not the only person shedding tears, either! In my defense I was like 8 months pregnant.

I might have started losing it when she thanked Ron, who is also amazing. He is an inspiration too. Because not only is he a smart guy and an excellent Marine, he is a guy who is secure in who he is, and has always been 100% supportive of his wife’s career, and is, I know, proud that she has excelled.

I was also so glad to see Tanya, who was able to come. This was after, and my eyes are still watery.

I used a filter to hide my obvious crying.

Betsy came to town for Janine’s promotion too, and we were able to get dinner with her while she was in town, which was awesome. We ate at Don Taco, which has great food.

Doug and I also had dinner with a old internet friend of mine, Sydne. We go way back to costume stuff – and she made a ton of ball jointed doll stuff for me. She’s super talented. We’d never actually met in person, but she and her son were in town being tourists, so we met up for dim sum! It was so great to finally meet her!

So, funny story. We went to Chevy’s for lunch, and Meredith ordered fajitas. They were so hot, they kept popping and snapping in an unsettling way, the beans were literally boiling and as we sat there staring at it, the onions were turning to charcoal in front of our eyes. A chemical smell, like burning plastic was also rising up from Meredith’s lunch. We flagged the waitress since this actually seemed quasi unsafe and she looked at us like we had 3 heads. “They’re fajitas,” she said, like we had never seen them before. “They’re supposed to be like that.” We finally flagged a manager down and reexplained- and as he took them away to get her new ones, we realized the dish under the cast iron had in combo been so hot that it literally melted the varnish on the table, which was hot and sticky. Explaining the burnt plastic smell. O_o They’re fajitas!

I, in general have a dislike of mall kiosks, especially when they accost you. But this one popped up. They did not accost me, but they did have macarons. And they were delicious (and they were really big ones too!). I haven’t seen them back, but I would love for them to be more permanent!

We had dinner with Janine and Ron at Megroll – it used to be a food truck, now they have a storefront in Alexandria. They are delicious food in eggrolls. This was a Mexican one, and an Italian one. I forget exactly what was in them. Doug and I split. They were delicious.
IMG_4616

They also have an amazing smores one for dessert.

We couldn’t find the cat, and then discovered she’d made herself a new home in a box of hand-me-down baby stuff. LOL

Merja was in town for Caroline’s big birthday costume party, and Doug and I met up with her and her husband for coffee and donuts in Alexandria the next morning, since that is where their hotel was, and we aren’t far away. We had planned to go to this place that was selling Butterbeer golden snitch donuts for October. But they went viral, so they kept running out.
IMG_4778

Instead I got this mummy donut and a fall themed one. They were delicious. I’m sad I never had a chance to go back for a Butterbeer one though!

I was so glad to get some extra time with Merja too. <3 IMG_4783

Our local Pokemon Valor group had a meet-up for fun at the local pond. There was even a banner!

I love anything Halloween themed, and right now, also, hexagon themed. (Because of the James Webb Space Telescope of course). I splurged on a locket that had Halloween stuff in it and wore it all fall. And I also got a hex bracelet that all my friends wanted once they saw it!

My fav tree.

My friends The Return were in town – I already had plans for the night of their concert, but I was able to meet them in Annapolis for lunch to catch up with them, which was great!

So, true story, a gas grill mysteriously showed up at work. One of the Joes declared he was bringing in hot dogs, and by god he was going to grill them. So he did. Unfortunately I was skyping with a classroom at the time so I missed most of lunch.

IMG_4993

Which was sad, because one of the other Joes helped with the grilling out. Like this. (It was the last work day before Halloween.)

I did try this unholy abomination from Starbucks. No regrets.
