Disney, April 2018 – Monday – Animal Kingdom

Monday was our last full day at Disney. (We had an early flight out Tuesday morning.) We spent it at Animal Kingdom – largely because that was the day I was able to score Fast Passes for the new Flight of Passage ride. I was curious to see all the Avatar stuff. I had been a little skeptical – I mean I saw Avatar like 10 years ago and it was fine. But I have to say that I was super impressed with the physical landscaping. It truly was impressive and a bit like being on an exoplanet. You don’t need to care about Avatar to enjoy the new part of the park. I’d also heard the food was good and we liked it. And Flights of Passage was really very well done – it was like Soarin’ but better and more immersive. We didn’t get on the river ride because we could only FP one of the two. We thought about waiting in the overly long line because it was starting to rain and we thought we’d get out of the weather and into some climate control, but no, the line was out of doors and very hot, so we hoped out of that quickly. I have since been on the river boat ride though, and it’s nice.

I wish I’d had more time to see the Avatar stuff at night, because lit up, it’s pretty amazing. We couldn’t stay super late because we had to get the baby to bed, and we all would have an early morning, but I’m glad I got to see some of it.

Oh, and my big takeaway from this trip, is that if you go to Disney with a baby, every park has a baby center – where you can get out of the heat/weather, change diapers, nurse, or whatever you need to do. It’s awesome. And no one must know about them because they were almost always empty or nearly so. They all have a room with a Disney movie on (CoCo got spoiled for me so yay) too, if you or your kids need some time inside. And again, nice clean changing tables with paper on them that they swap out, and also a store so if you forgot or ran out of something, you could buy it. Two thumbs up for this. It made everything very easy.

In the morning, we did hit the club room for some light dessert, I mean breakfast. Pre-breakfast breakfast, since we had reservations at Boma.

We did get some cute Photo Pass pics.

We just managed to meet up for 5 minutes with DragonCon friends Kathy and David before they had to scramble for a Fast Pass. Kathy ran the previous day’s race.

They did have a loud drum show which we tried our best to avoid because of the noise. It also felt kinda weird, the whole thing, sometimes. Like the bad guys the movie had won, and set up a theme park for tourists on Pandora. And the cast members enthusiastically running the drum show they had “learned” from the Pandorans, made it feel weird like cultural appropriation. For fake culture. I know. But it was vaguely like white people running a show on sacred drum rites of Native Americans that they had “learned” from them, when there wasn’t a single native around, and we were tromping through their land. So there was that.

She liked chewing on (and drooling on) the edge of the ergo carrier.
IMG_3076

LOL

IMG_3079

We got lunch at Tiffin, but I doubt we’ll be back. It was way overpriced, pretentious, and the food wasn’t that great. A rare miss for Disney restaurants. The falafel was good.
IMG_3081

This was a soup – I wanna say crab?? It was lukewarm.
IMG_3082

The falafel:
IMG_3083

A burrata and beet salad. I’m not sure that piece of cheese could have been smaller. This wasn’t an inexpensive appetizer either. Boo.
IMG_3084

A fried cauliflower that tasted good, but they made that classic mistake of dumping the sauce all over it (instead of letting you dip or pour it yourself) so it was all soggy.
IMG_3085

The art was nice.

IMG_3089

So yeah, that was all we ordered to eat and it was underwhelming and expensive.

Then it was time for a safari!

Back to Pandora for dinner:

IMG_3147

Both desserts were really pretty – this is Blueburry Cream Cheese Mousse with passionfruit. I might have a slight preference for the chocolate but recommend trying both.

IMG_3158

IMG_3163

The cheeseburger buns/pods were tasteless. Though the veggie chips were good. But not worth buy this just for veggie chips.

IMG_3157

This was steak and chicken over the sweet potato hash with the black bean dressing and it was a winner.
IMG_3160

This was tofu over rice with the green onion dressing. It was good, but the first dish was best.
IMG_3161

(We later on tried the fish and we liked it.)

By the time we got out, Pandora was lighting up!
