England Day 4: Harry Potter Studio Tour, part 1

We spent the afternoon of our fourth day hitting the Harry Potter Studio Tour, which was super exciting. I had no idea what to expect, and we had a baby in tow. But as it turns out, minus one short video at the start of the tour, the whole thing is very kid and baby friendly (and the movie they show you is, again, short).

After the movie, they herd you into the Great Hall – if there are particular costumes you want to see, like the Grey Lady (which was the one thing I really wanted to see), ignore the tour guide and linger over whatever you like. Because once their little schpeil is done (they do a demo of the Goblet of Fire for kids), they usher you out of the Great Hall and you can’t get back in. There’s no real need to stand at the front, so take your time and take photos and soak it in – until they make you proceed.

It’s the only part of the tour where they force you to keep their pace. After the Great Hall, it’s self-guided, and you can wander as fast or slow as you want to go. The props and costumes are in large warehouses. The light is low and fairly bad for pictures (except for some of the outdoor pieces), and there are tons of people wandering around. It’s plenty noisy, not at all like a quiet museum. And lots of room for strollers. There is also a cafe about halfway through.

Because the light was low, I’m only going to post the pics that came best, but I’ll try to list some of the other things that were in that area. It’ll still be way picture heavy than it should be, but I’ll try not to overdo it! In the interest of that, here is part 1 of 2!

They have some of the Wizard chess pieces out in the parking area.

At last we are let into the Great Hall and I make a beeline for the Grey Lady, which is, of course, behind the table, so you can’t get real close

I adore this costume so much.

This will be a lot about the costume, so skip down if you aren’t interested!

The lighting was a little tough too, and my lack of a DSLR shows. The stomacher and sleeve ends both have bullion on them. And the upper arms have some swags hanging from them.

You can see one of the arm swags here. It goes to the floor and is made out of the skirt fabric.

Here’s the other side.

Costume-wise, the other thing in the Great Hall are the school uniforms for each House, as well as Moaning Myrtle:

In the front are some teacher costumes – Hagrid, Filch, McGonnagall, Dumbledor, Snape, Trelawny, Flitwick, and Mad-eye. The lighting is dark and you can’t get real close.

Once you are past the Great Hall, you can linger and take your time and go at your own pace! The first thing is costumes and props from the Yule Ball.

They also have the pattern and accessories for the Beauxbatons uniforms.
