Colorado/Albuquerque trip: Day 2, Sunrise on the Dunes

Day 2 of our trip to Albuquerque had us waking up early in Alamosa, Colorado, for our Sand Dunes day! (Because of the time change.)

Since we were awake and fairly close to the Dunes, I got a wild hare to drive out there and see if we could catch sunrise over the Dunes. So we jumped in the car. I mean, we were really too late for sunrise proper, but the Dunes were tall enough that the sun didn’t hit them for a while after.

We hit a really pretty view over the Rio Grande:

The night before, on the way to the hotel, we’d pulled out here, to check out the stars. The Milky Way was spectacular and everyone should get the chance to see it from a really dark sky.

And there are the Dunes in front of us, in the shadow of the mountains.

We drove up closer to the dunes, but the wind coming over the mountains from behind us was FIERCE! Made us a little concerned for our hike later in the day, but we hoped conditions would improve.

On the way back to the hotel, I yelped a restaurant, and the place we tried, Cavillos, had awesome breakfast burritos and totally hit the spot! And it was pretty empty.

Some playtime for Elena!

After a little rest, we showered and got ready to head back out to the Dunes for a proper hike!
