Colorado/Albuquerque trip: Day 5, Petroglyph National Monument

During our last afternoon in Albuquerque, we went to Slapfish for lunch. It was delicious and an easy place to eat – no wait, pay at the counter, food was fast.

Peter’s healthy shrimp salad, which also looked good.

After that, we considered the Sandia tram again… BUT the weather over the mountain looked absolutely terrible, like stormy. So we bailed on that again.

We decided to check out Petroglyph National Monument instead, since the weather looked good there. We loaded Elena up… and then learned that this was only the visitor center, and that there are 4 different hikes in different parts of Albuquerque that you could do.

It took us a while to pick a trail but I was happy with the one we picked. The parking lot was right near a cupcake place! We did the Piedras Mercados canyon trail.

Elena sacked out right away and was out for most of our hike! I was impressed by the number of petroglyphs easily visible! They were made by ancestral Pueblo Indians.

The hike takes you around a mound of rocks covered in glyphs, but there is also wide open land, that gives you a view of the mountains. The trail wasn’t super well marked and we had to backtrack to hit all the markers that had info associated with them.

Peter and I both had Breaking Bad on the brain, so we saw Heisenberg everywhere we looked.

We ended up being glad we backtracked because some of the most impressive glyphs were at the last markers.

Cute sculptures near the lot where we parked. I think there was a vet there.

We stopped at the cupcake place and they didn’t have much left, but they did have three raspberry ones remaining and they were so delicious!

I think we ended up doing Panera takeout again for dinner, because we were so tired and full from lunch. So then we just sacked out in the hotel and watched Moana and rested up for our return home in the morning!
