Cherry Blossoms and Kite Festival (March 30, 2019)

Seeing the cherry blossoms in DC is always a crap shoot weather-wise. We’ve had years when we’ve had to bundle up because it was so cold (last year) and other years when it’s been really pleasant. Fortunately this year, it was beautiful. Unfortunately, peak blossom and the beautiful weather hit on a Saturday, which meant everyone would be there. But we knew what we’d be getting into and decided to give it a shot anyway.

I’ve spent several cherry blossom seasons pregnant (3), and then we somehow miraculously had a baby with us last year. This year we had a toddler and we had a great time with her.

We used spot hero to find us a garage on the edge of town. That worked out really well as we were parked in a hotel basement with easy elevator access (important with a stroller) and a Starbucks in the lobby. We got a snack box, some milk for her, lattes for us, and we headed out towards the mall. We sat for a while and just let her enjoy running around and eating cheese and crackers. We couldn’t have asked for better weather!

Besides peak bloom, this particular Saturday was also the kite festival! It was worth the crowds to see it. We’d never managed to catch it before and it was so so cool. The pics don’t do it justice, but it was a bit surreal to see hundreds and hundreds of kites in the sky. It was really beautiful.

I love the gardens near the Smithsonian castle. We got some schwarma sandwiches from a food truck and sat here and ate. We were still in the habit of breaking things up for Elena to eat, but she went to town on a sandwich and needed no help.

Then we headed back to our car, via Starbucks and headed home!

Fun day!
