A visit to Long Island (May/June 2019)

I’m a little out of order here (I know it doesn’t matter at all to anyone who might actually read this), but in late May/early June, we visited our friends John and Beth on Long Island.

John is a former work friend of mine, who used to be in the office next door to me, and we used to have game nights and hang out with him and his wife, Beth. They moved back to Long Island to be closer to family once she finished up her PhD. We have managed to stay in touch, though, and they’ve come down to see us a few times, and in 2018 we drove up to visit them. In 2019, we wanted to visit again, but the traffic was crazy bad driving home last time. Since I had a Companion pass still on Southwest, and we had a lap baby AND we had some flight vouchers from a massive delay, we decided to fly up to Islip since it would end up being really cheap. John and Beth have a daughter a little older than Elena, and at this point had another on the way!

We tried to get lunch once we got there, but Elena had fallen asleep in the car and was really bad at the restaurant. It’s really rare for her to be that way, but waking up too early from a nap and being grumpy is a good recipe for a not-great meal.

After that we headed over to meet up with John and Beth at their house. Elena and F had fun together!

For dinner we headed out to a place near the beach called La Casa Pizza. The no-see-um bugs were biting unfortunately, but I still enjoyed seeing the water!

Waiting for our table:

Seriously the pasta was so good!

This was vodka sauce:

The next morning, John went out for bagels, including some fun rainbow ones!

After breakfast, we headed over to the Long Island Aquarium, and had a great day!

Someone fell asleep on the drive over.

We did the butterfly room, which I love. Elena was mildly freaked out by the butterflies!

Elena had a diaper leak by this time, so no pants.

We also saw some birdies!

The Aquarium had a cool Atlantis theme.

I was extremely taken with this mermaid fountain.

Before we headed out, we decide to see if we could cram 4 adults (one pregnant) and 2 toddlers into a single photobooth. The answer was yes.

Then we headed back to the house to relax. Elena was so taken with F’s cookie monster that I ended up buying her one from Amazon. She even slept with it!

John’s family came over for a BBQ for dinner, and we got out the water table for the toddlers. Elena had a great time. We didn’t have a ton of spare clothes so we just let her run around in a diaper and get all wet.

Funnily John, Beth, and John’s brother all play Pokemon (team yellow), and John’s brother said he had me nicknamed “the red beast” in his game because I was the only level 40 he knew! 😂

We had a great visit! And flying was 100% the way to go!
